Lyons, Sterling to pay less for 911 service

Eds: APNewsNow.

LYONS, Kan. (AP) -- Lyons and Sterling will pay less for their use of Rice County 911 services.

Rice County commissioners approved the new rates for the 911 Dispatch Center that the two towns had contracted to pay for 911 service.

Currently, Lyons pays 30 percent of the administrative operation cost for the center and Sterling pays 20 percent. The new rates, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2010, will drop to 24 percent for Lyons and 16 percent for Sterling.

The county will absorb the rest of the cost.

The rate change comes after the Lyons City Council voted in April to withdraw from the county 911 dispatch service. The council rescinded that decision in June after residents protested.
