Fight is on to save hospital in Larned

Eds: APNewsNow.

LARNED, Kan. (AP) -- A committee has formed to try and keep St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned open.

The Pawnee County Community Health Organization has formed a task force to study the issue. It will hold a town hall meeting Monday to discuss the effort to keep the hospital open.

The owner of the hospital, Catholic Health Initiatives of Denver, announced earlier this month that it would close the hospital and a long-term care unit in Larned because of a lack of patients.

The Pawnee County organization issued a statement Monday saying it wants time to either buy the hospital and critical care license or to find a qualified buyer.
