FHSU awards scholarships to area students

Several local students accepted scholarships from Fort Hays State University for the 2013-14 academic year at a recent Student Recognition Program in Phillipsburg.

They include:

Abigail Rohr, a 2011 Colby High School graduate and a Colby Community College transfer student, accepted a $1,000 Transfer Scholarship. Rohr is the daughter of Bill Rohr, Colby. She plans to major in medical diagnostic imaging.

Christina Hilt, a 2011 St. Francis Community High School graduate and a Colby Community College transfer student, accepted a $1,000 Transfer Scholarship. Hilt is the daughter of Sherri Hilt, St. Francis. She plans to major in biology.

Shayla Hilt, a 2011 St. Francis Community High School graduate and a Colby Community College transfer student, accepted a $1,000 Transfer Scholarship. Hilt is the daughter of Sherri Hilt, St. Francis. She plans to major in mathematics.

Kyle Berkgren, a 2011 Ukarumpa International School graduate and a Colby Community College transfer student, accepted a $1,000 Transfer Scholarship. Berkgren is the son of Ken and Melissa Berkgren, Colby. He plans to major in physics.

Ben Baird, a 2013 Brewster High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in history. Baird is the son of Kathy Baird, Brewster. He plans to major in history education.

Dan Brown, a 2013 Brewster High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in health and human performance and an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award. Brown is the son of Mike Brown and Peggy Ohlrogge, Brewster. He plans to major in athletic training.

Michael Schmidt, a 2013 Brewster High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in agriculture. Schmidt is the son of Stuart Schmidt, Brewster. He plans to major in agribusiness.

Rockell Bedore, a 2013 Colby High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in psychology and a $500 Copper Academic Award. Bedore is the daughter of Rock and Jacque Bedore, Colby. She plans to major in psychology.

Mishaela Benson, a 2013 Colby High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in psychology and an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award. Benson is the daughter of James and Denni Rehmer, Colby, and Tom and Tina Benson, Colby. She plans to major in psychology.

Kaitlyn Flanagin, a 2013 Colby High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in art and design and a $700 Fort Hays Bronze Academic Award. Flanagin is the daughter of Jay and Luetta Flanagin, Colby. She plans to major in interior design.

Alexa Schindler, a 2013 Colby High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in teacher education. Schindler is the daughter of Raymond Schindler and Tiffany Mader, Colby. She plans to major in elementary education.

Lacie Cowan, a 2013 Goodland High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in the College of Business and Entrepreneurship and a $700 Fort Hays Bronze Academic Award. Cowan is the daughter of Brad and Kris Cowan, Goodland. She plans to major in management and marketing.

Amy Floyd, a 2013 Goodland High School graduate, accepted an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in geosciences. Floyd is the daughter of Dave and Denise Floyd, Goodland. She plans to major in geoscience.

Carly McCracken, a 2013 Goodland High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in biological sciences and a $700 Fort Hays Bronze Academic Award. McCracken is the daughter of Carl and Sue McCracken, Goodland. She plans to major in biology.

Jacob Schnabel, a 2013 Goodland High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in music and theater and a $500 Copper Academic Award. Schnabel is the son of Loren and Marjie Schnabel, Goodland. He plans to major in music.

Cooper Slough, a 2013 Goodland High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Oppportunity Award in English and a $700 Fort Hays Bronze Academic Award. He also won the drawing for an iPad. Slough is the son of Gary and Diana Slough, Goodland. He plans to major in English education.

Trace Waugh, a 2013 Goodland High School graduate, accepted an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in history. Waugh is the daughter of Scott Waugh and Traci Price-Waugh, Goodland. She plans to major in history education.

Brady Bainter, a 2013 Hoxie High School graduate, accepted a $700 Fort Hays Bronze Academic Award. Bainter is the son of Mike Bainter, Grainfield, and Janet Bainter, Hoxie. He plans to major in business.

Sarah Farber, a 2013 Hoxie High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in the College of Business and Entrepreneurship and an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award. Farber is the daughter of Randy and Nicola Farber, Hoxie. She plans a to major in public accounting.

Marlee McKenna, a 2013 Hoxie High School graduate, accepted a $500 Copper Academic Award. McKenna is the daughter of Greg and Paula McKenna, Selden. She plans to major in biology.

Faith Charles, a 2013 Oakley High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in music and theater and a $700 Fort Hays Bronze Academic Award. Charles is the daughter of Dave and Dana Charles, Oakley. She plans to major in music education.

Ethan Plummer, a 2013 Oakley High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in health and human performance. Plummer is the son of Kevin and Andrea Plummer, Oakley. He plans to major in health and human performance.

Laura Brunk, a 2013 St. Francis Community High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in agriculture and a $700 Fort Hays Bronze Academic Award. Brunk is the daughter of Eddie and Julie Brunk, St. Francis. She plans a career in veterinary medicine.

Sarah Whitmore, a 2013 St. Francis Community High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in English and an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award. She also won the drawing for a $400 Student Recognition Program Scholarship. Whitmore is the daughter of Jerry and Lila Whitmore, St. Francis. She plans to major in English.

Hailey Fryback, a 2013 Triplains High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in art and design and an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award. Fryback is the daughter of Jeff and Mindy Fryback, Colby. She plans to major in graphic design.

Jenna Kriegh, a 2013 Wallace County High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in psychology and an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award. Kriegh is the daughter of Justin and Clarissa Kriegh, Sharon Springs. She plans to major in psychology.

Elijah Kuhlman, a 2013 Wallace County High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in agriculture. Kuhlman is the son of John Kuhlman, Sharon Springs. He plans to major in agriculture.

Nick Smith, a 2013 Weskan High School graduate, accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in agriculture and an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award. Smith is the son of Ray Smith, Sharon Springs. He plans to major in agribusiness.

Brandan Escamilla, a 2013 Weskan High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in health and human performance. Escamilla is the son of Daniel and Annette Escamilla, Weskan. He plans to major in health and human performance.

Brooke Ostmeyer, a 2013 Wheatland High School graduate, accepted an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in biological sciences. Ostmeyer is the daughter of Terry and Stephanie Ostmeyer, Grinnell. She plans to major in biology.

Chase Berg, a Colby Community College transfer student, accepted a $1,000 Transfer Scholarship. Berg is the son of James Berg, Gem. He plans to major in industrial technology.
