'Jana's Story' video to be released Tuesday

Special to The Hays Daily News

Release of the video "Jana's Story," is slated for Tuesday, bringing to light the dramatic impact of domestic violence by unveiling the story of Hays native Jana Mackey.

The video, produced by Jana's Campaign advocates, tells the story of Mackey, a 25-year-old University of Kansas law student who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in Lawrence in 2008.

Mackey was well-known throughout Kansas for her advocacy for women's rights and served as a sexual assault and domestic violence advocate.

She was one of the youngest lobbyists at the Kansas state capitol.

The video can be viewed at JanasStory.org.

Timing of the video release coincides with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, which began Nov. 25 on the International Day Against Violence Against Women and ends Saturday on International Human Rights Day.

Since 1991, the annual campaign has mobilized more than 3,700 organizations in 164 countries to raise awareness of violence against women.
