Late fees on the way for pet tag scofflaws

Pet owners have until the end of February to register their dogs and domestic cats with the city of Hays before late fees will be assessed.

2013 pet tags went on sale Dec. 1 and are on sale at the city clerk's office at city hall. Cost of registration for spayed and neutered pets is $5, non-spayed or neutered animals are $25. Dangerous dog fees, in addition to city registration fees, are $50.

Starting March 1, pet owners will be charged $10 per month, a maximum of $50, for each month they're late registering their pet.

"I can't stress enough the benefits of having registration tags on your pets at all times," said Nikki Hausler, city of Hays animal control officer. "I'm making this my personal mission to get folks to get their animals registered."
