23rd annual Polkafest set for top-notch performance

Organizing the 23rd annual Polkafest to benefit the Cancer Council of Ellis County has proved to be a little tougher this year, according to the executive director.

The council is hosting the event for the first time without the help of active leader Francis Schippers, who died in May.

"He knew so many people and where to go and what to do," said Paula Flesher, executive director of the Cancer Council of Ellis County.

The council presented Schippers' family with a service award at its annual meeting, and Flesher said his absence will be noted during this year's Polkafest on March 20 and 21 at Fanchon Ballroom.

This year, the Top Notchmen, a Wisconsin polka band, will highlight the two-day event with local bands -- the Wes Windholz Band and the Country Dutchmen -- also performing. The Country Dutchmen will lead a polka Mass at 10:30 a.m. March 21.

Flesher said Polkafest usually draws dancers from all over the state of Kansas as well as from Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri and Oklahoma.

"Some of the people that follow these big bands will come in," Flesher said, noting she expects a Top Notchmen following from Wisconsin this year.

Polkafest will be from noon to 11 p.m. March 20 and noon to 5 p.m. March 21.

Tickets for the event are $12 Saturday and $8 Sunday or $18 for both days if purchased by March 19. Advance tickets are available by calling the Cancer Council of Ellis County at (785) 625-6653.
