Sexual assaults reported during weekend

The Hays Police Department is investigating two unrelated reports of sexual assault, including one early Saturday morning resulting in the rape of an 18-year-old woman after she was followed by two men for several blocks.

That incident took place at approximately 4:47 a.m. Saturday in the 2900 block of Canal.

As she was being assaulted by one of the men, the second man apparently stopped the attack and they both ran south from the area, Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said Sunday evening.

"We're very interested in speaking to subject No. 2," he said. "Of course, we want to identify both of them, but he may be more of a witness."

The woman said she was followed by the two men for several blocks before they started chasing her.

The man who reportedly raped the woman was identified as a white male with a medium complexion. He was reported to be about 5-feet, 9-inches tall, weighing approximately 180 pounds. He had blond hair and light-colored eyebrows and was somewhere between 20 and 25 years old.

The second man, who apparently stopped the assault, was only described as a white male, with brown hair and a slender build.

The woman, Scheibler said, apparently went out for a walk to "calm down" after she had an argument with her boyfriend.

"We really want to speak to subject No. 2," Scheibler reiterated. "We believe he is more of a witness than a suspect."

The second incident, which Scheibler said doesn't appear to be related, was reported at approximately 3:06 a.m. Sunday.

In that case, a second 18-year-old woman reported she had been sexually assaulted in an apartment near the Fort Hays State University campus.

Scheibler said the woman apparently met a man at a local bar before going with him to an unknown apartment.

She then reported she had been sexually assaulted by the suspect, who she described as an 18- to 20-year-old Hispanic male. She said he was about 5-feet, 8-inches tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds with short black hair.

Scheibler said alcohol was a factor, and both individuals in the Sunday morning incident had been drinking.

Anyone with information about either case is asked to call the police department at (785) 625-1030. Investigator Bill Lovewell is leading the investigation of both cases.
