Goodland girls take second at state

PITTSBURG -- Goodland High School took second place at the Class 4A state girls' golf tournament on Monday, held at Crestwood Country Club. The Cowgirls shot 388, 14 strokes shy of first place Topeka Hayden.

Colby took 12th with a 448. Goodland was led by Paulina Wagner's 91. Wagner tied with Russell's Megan Boxberger for 11th place. Also medaling for Goodland was Katie Hays, who shot a 96 to tie for 17th. Russell's Alex Ptacek shot 103 to finish tied for 34th.

Buhler's Taryn Torgerson won the individual crown with a 78.

At the Class 3-2-1A tournament in Cheney, Thomas More Prep-Marian senior Monica Michaud shot 106 to tie for 23rd place, three strokes short of medaling. Michaud's younger sister, freshman Hannah Michaud, shot a 128.

Kyla Bandel of St. Francis tied for 13th place with 100.

Host Cheney won the team title with a score of 400, led by tournament co-champion Brooklyn Lonker's 87. Lonker tied with Cimarron's Jessica Ast.

Hays High takes eighth place at Class 5A

WICHITA -- The Hays High School girls' golf team took eighth place with a score of 393 at the Class 5A state golf tournament, held Monday at Tex Consolver Golf Course in Wichita.

Junior Lexie Schaben was the top finisher for the Indians, shooting a 94 for 22nd place, a stroke shy of medaling.

Freshman Katie Brungardt shot a 96 for 27th place, junior Elissa Jensen 100 for 37th place, and freshman Rhian Patterson 103 for 49th place.

Also competing for Hays High was sophomore Taylor DeBoer, who shot 111 for 64th place, and junior Macie Mayo, who shot a 114 for 73rd place.

Salina Central's Alissa Kim, who won the regional hosted by Hays High at Smoky Hill Country Club last week, was the Class 5A individual champion after shooting a 77.

The overall team title went to Wichita's Kapaun Mount Carmel, which had a four-player score of 360. Wichita Bishop Carroll took second with a 366.
