Courts in Ellis and Trego counties will be closed much of Thursday to give court personnel time to attend the funeral of former District Judge Tom Toepfer.

Toepfer, 61, died Monday at his home, less than two months after retiring from the bench, a position he held for 12 years.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church. A wake is planned for Wednesday at Hays Memorial Chapel.

Ellis County's District Court offices will be closed until 2 p.m. Thursday so staff, judges and lawyers can attend the funeral. Any hearings scheduled during that time will be rescheduled.

Trego County District Court in WaKeeney will be closed as well until 2 p.m., and hearings there will be rescheduled.

District courts in Gove and Rooks counties, also part of the 23rd Judicial District will remain open, but some hearings might be continued because of attorneys attending Toepfer's funeral.
