Sessions will focus on response

The Kansas Highway Patrol will offer training sessions Monday to address active shooter awareness. The one-day program will be offered to Kansas schools and law enforcement organizations free of charge.

A Hays training event will be at Fort Hays State University. The morning session will be for schools and law enforcement and includes a School Violence Awareness training session. Participants will look at case studies of the Columbine shooting in 1999 and the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.

The afternoon session "Train the Trainer," is a response and mitigation training program designed to equip officers to train their departments on the key elements for active shooter response. It will be led by KHP and special response team members from across Kansas.
