HHS wrestlers claim WAC title

GREAT BEND -- The Hays High School wrestling team won its second straight WAC title with Thursday's 38-27 win over Great Bend.

Hays High fell behind 27-3 in the dual, but won the final eight matches.

Junior Leroy Franco started the comeback with a 6-5 decision over Joe Lindenberger at 145 pounds. Freshman Ethan Deterding edged Emerson Campbell 2-0 at 152, followed by a 9-2 decision by junior Kyler Meyers over Darian Yager at 160 pounds.

Sophomore Preston Weigel had a 15-0 technical fall over Bryce Hofmeister at 170 pounds, then senior Brandon Weigel pinned Justin Henry at 182.

Junior Chandler Rule won a 4-2 decision over Roman Garcia at 195, then HHS took the lead when senior 220-pounder Cash Drylie pinned Ivan Prieto.

Great Bend needed a pin at 285 for the win, but instead HHS senior Luke Madden pinned Jacob Crane 55 seconds into their match.

Great Bend started out strong, with Ryan Deslauries winning 6-0 over sophomore Russ Kohl at 106, then Arturo Sanchez was a 6-1 winner over sophomore Caleb Hecker at 113.

HHS senior Kevin Arnhold was pinned by Chris Burley at 120 pounds, but senior Derek Stiles was a 6-1 winner over Brett Roberts at 126.

At 132, Hays High freshman Tathan Burkhart was pinned by Greg Burley, and Indian junior Cade Albert lost by fall to Cody Lytle at 138 before HHS started the comeback.
