At Monday’s Ellis County Commission meeting, commissioners agreed to reduce fees for disposal of demolition material for a project by the Ellis Industrial Development Corp.

EIDC President Travis Kohlrus told commissioners the group recently purchased the Ellis House Inn, an old motel on the north side of Ellis located just west of Cancun Mexican Grill.

The group has a plan to remove the asbestos and has contracted with M&D Excavating to demolish the building and prepare the land for sale.

He said there have been a few leads for businesses interested in the location.

“Because we’re a group that doesn’t have an income base, we wanted to reach out and see if there was any ability to reduce our fees or eliminate our fees as part of the disposal of that motel,” Kohlrus said.

He estimated the material would amount to 200 to 400 tons, 80 percent to 90 percent of which would be standard construction and demolition material. The group will recycle as much material as possible, such as concrete, he said.

Normal fees are $32 per ton. The county commissioners agreed to reduce that fee by half for the project.

Kohlrus said the project will begin in approximately a month and should be completed by September
