As Washington lawmakers work to craft the next farm bill, a Kansas farm group is hosting listening sessions across Kansas with organizational leaders who will be helping influence the legislation.

During the first week in August, the Kansas Farmers Union will host four farm bill discussions. Staff from the National Farmers Union will be in-person to listen to farmers and others about what they want to see in the new bill. States across the country also will be having listening sessions.

According to the KFU leadership, they hope the next bill will have a better safety net, especially amid a stagnant farm economy.

Meetings include:

Aug. 1 - Douglas County - Juniper Hill Farms, 1547 N. 2000 Road, Lawrence; dinner begins at 6:30 with discussion at 7 p.m. The event is hosted by the Thelman family and Douglas County Farm Bureau.
Aug. 2 - Jackson County - Prairie Band Casino, 12305 150th Road, Mayetta; event begins at 3:30 p.m. and attendees are welcome to stay for a free meal at a convention banquet afterward.
