WaKEENEY — Convicted murderer Francis Donald Nemechek has been denied parole and will not be eligible for consideration of release for another 10 years.

The Trego County Attorney’s Office received word of the decision Thursday from the Kansas Prisoner Review Board. Family members of the victims then were notified.

Nemechek, a native of WaKeeney, was convicted in 1977 of murdering four women and a boy in a two-year period. It is the fifth time he was up for parole.

Family members obtained more than 21,000 signatures on petitions they presented to review board members in a public comment session in June.

Kathleen Fabrizius, WaKeeney, who organized the petition drive, said Thursday afternoon she was very happy with the news.
