A Russell man was arrested Tuesday evening after fleeing from police, resulting in a pursuit and manhunt in a rural area northeast of Hays.

Joshua A. Smith, 28, Russell, was taken into custody by the Ellis County Sheriff's office after fleeing from a Kansas Highway Patrol officer, who attempted to stop his vehicle at approximately 8 p.m.

The suspect, driving a 2012 Nissan Versa, led authorities northeast of Hays on county roads. The vehicle came to a stop at 8:17 p.m., and Smith then fled on foot into a pasture.

An hour-long manhunt ensued, and the KHP aircraft was called to assist, said Trooper Tod Hileman, public resources officer with the northwest Kansas branch of KHP.

The suspect was located an hour later and arrested at 9:17 p.m. without further incident near the intersection of 310th Ave. and Severin Road. No one was injured.

There was an outstanding felony warrant for Smith's arrest, and he will face additional charges including speeding, traffic misdemeanors and eluding law enforcement, Hileman said.
