COLBY — A California man was taken to the hospital after the vehicle he was driving was struck by a semi Monday afternoon on Interstate 70.

Juan C. Melendez, 24, Hawthorne, Calif., was driving a 2003 Toyota eastbound approximately 16 miles west of Colby just after 1 p.m. at a slow rate of speed due to a flat tire, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. The vehicle was struck from behind by a 2016 Freightliner driven by Nicolas R. Wilkinson, 25, Aurora, Colo.

Melendez was taken to Citizen’s Medical Center, Colby, with injuries.

Two passengers, Brittany G. Mendoza, 7, and Lidia Hernandez, 24, also of Hawthorne, were not injured.

Wilkinson also was not injured. All were using safety restraints, according to the KHP report.
