BAXTER SPRINGS - On homecoming night in Baxter Springs, the Lions showed the over-flowing crowd that they can score. In fact, 55 points in the second quarter, and a final score of 71-12, over the Arma-Northeast Vikings.
The visiting Vikings came outs swinging as quarterback Karter Dugan was successful on his first four passes. Austin Hendrix picked off his sixth attempt. A loss from a Lion fumble put the Vikings at the Baxter Springs 12. Dugan hit Arin Katzer to start Northeast out 6-0.
After Northeast’s score the game seemed not to look good for the Lions. Starting quarterback Trey White was injured earlier on a defensive play and removed for the evening. Freshman Brayden Barnard took over behind center. A dropped snap resulted in a Viking fumble recovery, but a Viking penalty gave the Lions a reprieve. A 10-yard Lion penalty moved them back 10 yards. From the 41 yard line Hendrix raced down the left sidelines. With Jose Leon’s kick the Lions led 7-6.
Narciso Ortiz, who played only the first half and finished with 121 yards rushing on only seven carries, set up the next score breaking tackles on a 40-yard run. Now in the second quarter, Tyler Price hit pay dirt from the 23.
On a Viking punt Kyler Reece went all the way, but a block in the back put the Lions back to their five. After runs by Ortiz and Hendrix, and an unsportsmanlike Viking penalty, they were ready to score at the 12. That’s what Ortiz did, and Leon made the score 21-6. One minute later Ortiz scored again from the five. With only five seconds off the clock Price did a pick-6 for 57 yards.
Another punt by the Vikings caused by Tristian Bush’s tackle for a loss the Lions started from the 50. So 16 seconds later Stephan Namelo scored from there, and with Leon’s kick, the Lions upped their lead 41-6.
Why stop scoring? There is still over six minutes left in the second quarter. With Reece taking over at quarterback he hit Zach Hill for 43 yards to the 14. A false start, and a run loss moved the Lions back to the 21. Spencer Barnard caught an end zone touchdown pass. Baxter Springs went to 49 points after a Reece to Jacob Burks pass for two points.
Hendrix got an interception on the Vikings next possession. It took only 45 seconds to score again on Reece’s 57 yard jaunt, and Leon’s kick. How about one more touchdown to end the half at 63 to 12.
Namelo had his own pick-6 for 35 yards, and Leon was good again.
As in the last two games, the Lions’ junior varsity played the second half and scored. Listed at 5’4” 119 pounds freshman Lane Hall took the second half kick off from the eight to his 42. Gage Piper went to Northeast’s 43. Tyrae Skye went to the 39, and Piper to the 27. After a bad snap and a illegal procedure call against the Lions found themselves back at the 41. Piper scored from there. A 2-point pass from Barnard to Kain McCully put the final total at 71.
The Lions now start district play with a Friday game with the tough 5-1 Columbus Titans. Next they travel to Parsons, and end their regular season at home against Frontenac.
