Title IX will be the focus of the next meeting of the Newton Area AAUW at 10 a.m. Nov. 11 at KIPCOR, 2515 College Ave., North Newton.

Deb Hamm, superintendent of Newton USD 373, will give a program titled "Title IX Under Current Administration." Hamm is the designated K-12 Title IX coordinator for Newton USD 373.

All K-12 schools and postsecondary institutions that received federal funds must designate at least one employee to coordinate their efforts to comply with and carry their responsibilities under Title IX.

Forty-five years ago Rep. and AAUW member Patsy Mink (D-Hawaii) led the charge in Congress to pass Title I of the Education Amendments in 1972.

The act read:

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."

The act prohibits hostile, threatening and discriminatory behavior.

The public is invited to the AAUW meeting. For more information, contact Carol Kirchmer at 316-217-3761.
