ELLIS — Pending Monday’s official vote canvassing, it appears a write-in candidate might have earned a seat on the Ellis USD 388 Board of Education.
An official count of write-in votes will not be available until Monday, but there were 463 write-in votes in that election. Dean Gottschalk had launched a write-in campaign for that race, but it is not yet clear if all of those votes were for him.
If so, that would make Gottschalk the top vote-getter, as Jared Schiel received 443 votes and Mike Gaschler earned the third spot with 313 votes. The fourth candidate, Vic Winter, trailed with 213 votes, and Brian Fischer received 209.
If the write-in votes are split between different candidates, it is possible Winter could take office.
Ellis Mayor David McDaniel is expected to continue serving in that capacity following Tuesday’s general election. Pending Monday’s official count, McDaniel led challenger Dena Patee by a margin of approximately 60 votes.
Faith Ann Scheck was re-elected city treasurer, with no challengers on the ballot.
Incumbents also were re-elected to serve on the city council, with the top three vote-getters — Robert Redger, Bret Andries and Holly Aschenbrenner — all currently serving.
