A multi-family home near Hays sustained significant damage during a fire Monday afternoon.

The Ellis County Fire Department was called to 1910 Leiker Road shortly before 5 p.m. Monday. A fire was found in one apartment of a multi-family dwelling.

Fire crews used one attack line to knock down and extinguish the fire. The fire extended into the attic, which led to removal of the ceiling and insulation to ensure there were no hot spots, Ellis County Fire Chief Darin Myers said in an email.

The ECFD was on scene for more than two hours. One apartment received fire and smoke damage, while the other had smoke damage. The fire was determined to have started in the furnace in the utility room of one apartment.

Water tankers automatically responded from Ellis and Victoria, along with additional fire engines from Victoria and Munjor. Ellis County EMS and the Ellis County Sheriff's Department assisted with traffic control and medical standby.

Fire crews also responded from the Hays Fire Department as part of an automatic aid agreement for structure fires.
