The Newton High School wrestling team has 10 out of 14 still competing, including three in the championship finals, after the first day of competition at the 55th Newton Invitational Tournament of Champions at Ravenscroft Gym.
Newton is in sixth place out of 27 teams after the first day. Valley Center leads the tournament with 119 points, followed by Arkansas City at 115.5, Washburn Rural at 109, Maize at 97, Derby at 89.5, Newton at 88, Blue Valley Southwest at 86, Manhattan at 83, Dodge City at 73.5 and Wichita South at 71.
“We have three in the finals and a lot of guys still alive on the backside,” Newton coach Tommy Edgmon said. “We have chance to score some more points.”
Newton started out deep in the standings, but moved into the top 10 in the last two rounds.
“We started out a little slow, but as the day went on, we started wrestling a little better,” Edgmon said. “Hopefully that will carry on into tomorrow. We just need to leave what happened today, today, and start tomorrow with a fresh mind set.”
At 113 pounds, Grant Treaster claimed a pair of second-period pins to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals against Justin Williams of Blue Valley Southwest, Treaster scored a pair of first period takedowns to lead 4-2. Treaster added an escape and a takedown in the second period. Treaster added three more takedowns with a pair of backpoints in the third period for a 15-5 major decision.
Treaster will face 19-0 Brian Gates of Hutchinson in the finals.
At 195 pounds, Wyatt Hendrickson scored a pair of first-round pins. In the semifinals, Hendrickson gave up a takedown to Dodge City’s xxxx right off the whistle and was nearly taken to his back, but scored an escape, a takedown and a pair of backpoints. Hendrickson scored the pin in the second period.
Hendrickson, 20-1, will face 11-1 Tyler Palic of Marion in the finals.
At 220 pounds, Cyle Gautschi scored a decision, a first-period pin and another decision to open the day. In the semifinals, Gautschi faced Jake McQuiggle of Maize. After a scoreless first period, McQuiggle scored a quick escape in the second. Gautschi scored a quick escape to start the third period. McQuiggle got a stall warning late in the period, but neither could score, forcing overtime. Gautchsi scored the takedown 28 seconds into overtime.
“He took a shot, and I knew I had an opportunity to get behind him,” Gautschi said. “His shot was out of bounds, so I got under his legs and took him down. My goal was to get him stalling early on, but that didn’t happen until the third period.”
Gautschi, 15-0, will face 21-0 Cordel Duhart of Blue Valley Southwest in the finals. Duhart is the defending Class 5A state champion at 220 pounds.
“I look forward to wrestling him and beating him,” Gautschi said. “I’ve never wrestled him before. I have to work my shots and not get gassed.”
After two wins in the first two rounds, including a pin, Dante Harper was pinned in the quarterfinals by Derby’s Triston Wills in the second period.
Harper will compete today in the fourth consolation round.
At 126, freshman Gaige Llamas had a bye, lost in the second round, and won in the second consolation round.
