U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister announced two people are facing federal charges after being caught with a large quantity of drugs earlier this year.

Danny Acosta-Zavala, 32, and Cecilia Ann Rios, 36, are charged with one count of possession of more than 12 pounds of heroin. The crime is alleged to have occurred Jan. 1 in Thomas County.

If convicted, they face not less than 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $10 million. The Drug Enforcement Administration investigated. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Rodebaugh is prosecuting.

In all cases, defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The indictments merely contain allegations of criminal conduct.
