A Hays business was damaged Wednesday afternoon in a structure fire. There were no reported injuries, and the cause remains under investigation.
The fire was reported just after noon Wednesday at C&E Doors, 2004 Vine. The building's interior sustained significant fire and smoke damage.
Firefighters arrived to find a fire burning above the ceiling in several rooms inside the business. Three hose lines were used to stop the fire from spreading and to extinguish the fire, according to a media release from the Hays Fire Department.
Heavy smoke conditions inside the building obscured firefighters’ vision, hampering efforts to get the fire under control.
The Hays Fire Department immediately was dispatched, assisted by Ellis County Fire Department Company No. 5, the Hays Police Department and Ellis County EMS.
Crews remained on the scene until approximately 4 p.m. Wednesday, and a portion of Vine Street was closed to traffic during the incident.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Hays Police Department, assisted by the Hays Fire Department and investigators from the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Six fire trucks and 27 firefighters responded.
This fire promptly was reported to 911 dispatchers by the building occupants, according to the press release. That helped limit the damage to the building. Firefighters are reminding residents to always report possible fires as quickly as possible.
