The City of Hays Fire Department is offering free installation of combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Free alarms are available for Hays residents who are on a fixed or limited income.
“Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms save lives and protect against injury and loss due to fire,” said firefighter Lucas Everett with the Hays Fire Department. “Having a working smoke alarm reduces one’s chances of dying in a fire by nearly half.”
To schedule a time for firefighters to install an alarm in your home, call (785) 628-7330.
The alarms are available as part of a statewide “Get Alarmed Kansas” program from the state fire marshal’s office.
The combination alarms have a sealed 10-year lithium ion battery for easy maintenance. There is no need to change batteries twice a year.
As a general rule, one alarm would be given for each floor of living space within a home.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can be deadly if it builds up inside a home. It is especially a risk in the winter season due to use of natural gas heaters, and only can be detected through the use of an alarm.
The Hays FD also provides free alarm and installation services for senior residents or those with limited mobility. For those who don’t qualify for a free alarm, the department can install alarms purchased by the resident.
