The Bethel College men’s basketball team looked ground down from the start in a 101-62 loss to Oklahoma Wesleyan Wednesday night in KCAC play at Thresher Gym.

The Threshers fell behind early and never recovered. The loss was Bethel’s fourth straight and eighth of the last nine games. Only three of those eight losses were by more than six points. The loss to OWU was Bethel’s worst of the season.

“I was honestly surprised by tonight’s effort,” Bethel coach Tony Hoops said. “We had two really good practices. The guys were really locked in. We just did not pay enough attention to detail. We missed our first wide-open threes that I thought we got good looks on. From there on, we let it affect how we played. We looked like we were an emotionally exhausted team tonight. We had some close losses, but tonight, it looked like we wanted something good to happen, but we didn’t want to make something good happen.”

OWU, 21-8 overall, 14-7 in the KCAC and ranked 20th in the NAIA Division II rankings, was led by K.J. Malveau with 16 points, followed by Chris Murphy with 15, Breiman Alexander with 13, David Beck with 11, Josh Wilcombe with 10 and Jake Feickert with 10.

Wesleyan takes sole possession of second place in the conference with the win, but a Southwestern 84-80 win over Bethany clinched the conference title for Southwestern and put the Eagles two games out of first with one remaining.

Chase Banister finished with 15 points to lead Bethel, four short of 1,000 for his college career. Terrell Marshall added 12. Sam Morgan had 10 rebounds.

The Eagles finished 42 of 75 from the field, while Bethel was 19 of 62.

Bethel trailed 11-2 to start the game. Bethel was one of 11 from the field for nine percent, while OWU was 12 of 20 60 percent.

Bethel trailed by 25 at the half, 54-29.

Bethel cut into the lead early in the second half, but OWU took a time out and pulled away the rest of the way.

Bethel falls to 7-21, 5-16 in KCAC play. Bethel hosts McPherson at 7 p.m. Saturday at Thresher Gym for senior night. McPherson is 10-19, 7-14 in KCAC play, but is coming off a 103-89 win against Saint Mary. Bethel fell 105-99 in the first meeting with the Bulldogs.

“I told them in the locker room, you can choose to be winners in life or you can choose to be losers,” Hoops said. “We have two quality seniors (Bannister and Maurice Jordan), who have played their hearts out. We can represent those seniors the way they deserve and the way college basketball needs to be played.”
