SMITH CENTER — A large grass fire smoldered through most of Monday in Smith County, located in a rural area between Smith Center and Kensington.

The fire temporarily caused the closure of Kansas Highway 8 due to reduced visibility, said Sharon Wolters, public information officer for Smith County.

“We had a fairly large grass fire, but no structures were lost,” Wolters said, noting the fire burned near K-80 and F Road. “They had to close the highway for a short period of time, but they were able to contain that fire by afternoon.”

Fire crews continued to monitor the site throughout the evening, and crews were dispatched again Monday night after a flare-up. The situation was under control as of Tuesday morning.

Smith County issued a burn ban on Feb. 26.
