RUSSELL — The Russell County Sheriff’s Office arrested an Iowa man Tuesday after searching rural areas after a reported attempt to steal a vehicle at a Russell business.
According to a press release from Russell County Sheriff Fred Whitman, just before 2 p.m. Tuesday, a Russell business called the county dispatch to report a Hispanic male attempted to steal one of the company’s vehicles, then left in a white Cadillac with a black ragtop.
The sheriff’s office, Russell Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol began a search for the vehicle.
The car was located about an hour later abandoned near U.S. Highway 281 and Walters Road. The law enforcement agencies, joined by officers from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism and a KHP aircraft, set up search and contacted residents in the area.
The suspect was located at about 5:18 p.m. near U.S. 281 and Walters Road along the Smoky Hill River in Russell County. He was apprehended without incident.
The suspect was identified as Juan Dedios Rodriguez, 34, Estherville, Iowa. He was arrested and booked into the Russell County jail on suspicion of attempted burglary and attempted theft. The Russell Police Department is investigating.
