The Fort Hays State University Gay/Straight Alliance annual drag show will present something new for its audience Friday.
The free show at 7 p.m. Friday in Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center will feature six student and six professional performers, but two audience members will be able to get in on the act.
“We are doing one thing this year that we’ve never done,” said Simone Brewer, vice president of the Gay/Straight Alliance. “We’re going to ask people to participate in a raffle to be picked from the crowd randomly.
During intermission, their makeup will be done, and then they have to lip sync for their life with the audience,” she said.
The student and professional performers will lip-sync, too, and provide some audience interaction. The professionals, some of whom are FHSU alumni, are from the Wichita and Kansas City areas.
The organization will also for the first time collect donations to offer a $1,000 scholarship. Current and incoming FHSU students who are LGBTQ or allies will be eligible, Brewer said.
“We are going to be looking for people who are the most involved in advocacy for the community,” she said.
