MCPHERSON — The Hays High girls soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Topeka High in its season opener, falling 3-2 in a shootout to the Trojans on Monday in the McPherson Invitational.

It was a tough opening task for the Indians, who were facing a Topeka High team that returned all but four seniors off last year's squad that went 11-5-1.

Hays' Hannah McGuire and Allison Shubert scored during the shootout while Alani Snook, Lauren Dietrick and Morgan Corranza found the back of the net for the Trojans.

The match was physical with 25 total fouls. Topeka High was called for 16 fouls and Hays was whistled for nine.

"The girls played super tough and I couldn’t be more proud of how hard they all worked," Hays coach Silas Hibbs said.

Shots on goal were tied at 5-5 and Hays had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.   Both teams had near-misses, with Topeka High hitting two cross bars and Hays hitting a post.   McGuire also saw a shot nearly cross the goal line before the Topeka High goalie Phoenix Michaelis corralled for it a save.    Hays will play Salina South in the tournament at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
