SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Fred Mickelson has long joked with his brother and sister-in-law that the trio should make the trip to a Final Four.

When Kansas beat Duke in the Elite 8, knowing that this year’s tournament site was within driving distance, the group decided it was time to make that dream a reality.

“It was close enough to come,” Mickelson said. “We’ve always talked about coming to one.”

So, the lifelong Hays resident made the 750-mile drive with brother Greg and sister-in-law Billie Shippy. They arrived in San Antonio on Thursday night, and are ready to root on Kansas in the national semifinal Saturday night in the Alamodome. The Jayhawks square off with Villanova.
