Heading into Fort Hays State University's home track and field meet, All-American pole vaulter Sam Dreiling knew it would be real easy to get a little too amped up for the Alex Francis Classic.

"It's fun to come here and compete, but I kind of have to walk into meets with the mindset: 'It's just another meet, don't get too excited,' " Dreiling said. "That's the big hindrance to me: I like to get too excited. At this one especially, I have to remind myself, 'Uh, just calm down a little bit.' "

Dreiling certainly looked calm, cool and collected Friday at the FHSU Track and Field Facility. He set a personal record by clearing 16 feet, 9 ¼ inches (5.11 meters) to win the event.

"I was hoping to get a little bit higher, but the highest I went was good enough," Dreiling said. "It felt nice, just really wish I would have ended better."

Dreiling's outing was one of several highlights on the day for the Tigers, who claimed men's and women's team championships and posted a combined 15 individual titles.

"Overall, I was very pleased," FHSU head coach Jason McCullough said. "The weather was not the best. It was a good temperature but extremely windy, so it's kind of hard to get really good marks on the track and even in some of the field events. But I thought, overall, the athletes competed very well today."

The Tigers went 1-2 in the men's pole vault with Jake Morrow taking second with a mark of 16-7 1/4 (5.06 meters).

"Those two work very well together and they challenge each other," McCullough said. "One week Jake will be the top vaulter and the next week Sam will. It's good to see them both continually develop and get better."

The vaults for Dreiling and Morrow were both good enough for NCAA Division II provisional marks.

"He and I push each other every practice, every day — doesn't matter if we jump or in the weight room or if we're doing simple med ball drills," Dreiling said. "We'll even see who can out-sprint each other. It's great to vault with him."

After earning All-America honors in the indoor season, Dreiling said he's been encouraged by his first two outdoor meets.

"I feel pretty good with where I'm at," he said. "I think the 5-11 there is kind of guaranteed to get me into the national meet. It's nice because I think the 5-06 is going to get Jake into the national meet as well.

"Like always, we just keep looking for higher and higher marks."

The Fort Hays State men bested the 12-team field with 212 points. Nebraska-Kearney was second with 124.5.

On the track, FHSU's Decano Cronin won the 400 in 49.35, Brett Meyer claimed the 1,500 in 4:01.72 and Reed Rome won the 5,000 in 15:35.75.

The Tiger men also grabbed two relays. The 400 relay team of Jacob Irvin, Jacob Schumacher, Johnathan Penrose and Malcom Gardner won in 42.54. On the 1,600 relay, Cronin, Schumacher, Meyer and Gardner took first with a 3:25.29.

In the javelin, Derek Bixenman took first with a throw of 168 feet.

On the women's side, FHSU accumulated 216 points to top the 10-team field. UNK was second with 132.5.

FHSU's Amber Forbes won the 100-meter dash in 11.65 and Kelly Wycoff won the 200 in 24.33.

In distance, Lindsay Roberts took first in the 1,500 with a time of 4:47.73 and Yessenia Gonzales won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:53.80.

The 1,600 relay team team of Sharee Zombo, Yanoudji Diarra, Forbes and Wycoff won first in 4:05.93.

In the field, Selam Ball won the women's pole vault with a mark 12 feet, 3 ¼ inches. Rohey Singhateh claimed took the long jump with her leap of 18-5 ¾.

Madison Wolf was again impressive in the javelin, claiming the event with a throw of 148-3.

The Tigers will be action next Thursday through Saturday in the MIAA vs. NSIC Showdown in Maryville, Mo.

"I'm extremely pleased with how the athletes have been competing," McCullough said. "Now we just need to seek out some good weather and finish off some good marks to get some more qualifiers for the national meet."
