RUSSELL — A teenage driver reaching for a cell phone caused a crash Sunday evening in Russell County that sent him and his passenger to the hospital.

The Kansas High Patrol reported Layn Logsdon, 16, Russell, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet 1500 southbound in the 3800 block of 181st Street just before 6:30 p.m. when he reached across the vehicle to get a cell phone, causing the vehicle to go into the west ditch.

The pickup struck a residential driveway entrance, became airborne and struck the ground with its front end and flipping end to end. It went through a barbed-wire fence and came to rest on its wheels in a pasture.

Both Logsdon and passenger Emme Pfannenstiel, 14, Russell, were taken to Russell Regional Hospital. Both were wearing safety restraints, according to the KHP.
