HUFFAKER WINS TITLE: At Beloit, Southeast of Saline senior Jake Huffaker was individual medalist at the Beloit Invitational on Thursday.

Huffaker shot a 1-over-par 71 to win the tournament by eight strokes over Russell’s Ryan Birky and Smith Center’s Austin Hobelmann. Huffaker made three consecutive birdies starting on Hole No. 3 and was 1-under on the front nine.

Sacred Heart had two individuals competing at Beloit, with Morgan Newell placing seventh with a 92, while Jack Elmore took ninth with a 93.

 

TENNIS

KNIGHTS SHARE TITLE: At Ellinwood, Sacred Heart had first-place finishes in three of four divisions and tied for the team title at the Ellinwood quadrangular on Thursday.

The Knights finished with 13 team points, matching Ellinwood for the top spot. Third place went to Hutchinson Trinity with nine points.

Sacred Heart’s Blake Palen went 2-0 to win the No. 1 singles division. There was a three-way tie at the top of No. 1 doubles when three of the four teams finished 2-1, but Sacred Heart’s Trace Leners and Charlie Skidmore had the tiebreaker for first. The Knights also had a first-place finish at No. 2 doubles where Kobe Douglas and Josh Jordan went 3-0.

 

BASEBALL

SE OF SALINE, BELOIT SPLIT: At Beloit, Hunter Whittecar pitched six strong innings and Southeast of Saline scored twice in the top of the seventh in winning the first game 2-0. Beloit won the second 10-1.

Whittecar (3-0) struck out six in six inning, Kyler Berry struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh for his first save.

Southeast had just one hit — Whittecar’s RBI single in the seventh. Hunter White walked, stole second and wen to third on a passed ball. After Bryant Banks walked, White stole home and Banks went to third, where he scored on Whittecar’s hit.

Berry (2-1) started the second game. Beloit led 9-0 after three innings. Berry had two of Southeast’s four hits.

Southeast is now 9-3 overall, 3-1 in the NCAA.

 

AWARDS

KWU’S RINCON RECEIVES HONOR: Kansas Wesleyan’s Mario Rincon has been named the Kansas Conference’s Player of the Week in men’s tennis.

Rincon, a junior from Bogota, Colombia, was 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles while teaming with Felix Diaz.

Rincon is 7-4 in singles and 10-3 in doubles this season.
