LIBERAL — The Hays High baseball team split a doubleheader Thursday at Liberal, winning the first game 5-4 before dropping the second matchup 1-0.
Hays now sits 7-1 on the season.
The Indians led 5-0 before giving up four runs in the bottom of the sixth of the first game. Palmer Hutchison then held Liberal scoreless in the seventh inning to close it out.
Trey VanPelt had two hits with two runs driven in for Hays. Cole Murphy earned the win on the mound, allowing one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Liberal scored the lone run of the second game off an Indians' error in the second inning. Hays managed just three hits in the game.
Trey Riggs took the loss on the mound despite allowing just one unearned run and four hits in 4 2/3 innings.
