The Hays High baseball team missed out on a chance to claim at least a share of the Western Athletic Conference title, but the Indians managed to salvage a doubleheader split on Monday against Great Bend at Indian Field.
The Indians fell 2-0 to the Panthers in the first game but earned a 5-4 walkoff win in the nightcap, wrapping up WAC play at 6-2.
Hays will now await Tuesday's doubleheader between Liberal, which sits 5-1 in WAC play, and Garden City. The Indians can claim a share of the title with a Liberal loss and will win it outright if the Redskins get swept by Garden.
The Indians managed just four hits in Game 1 on Monday. The Panthers scored both their runs in the fifth inning, aided by two Hays errors.
Trey Riggs went the distance on the mound for Hays. He allowed four hits and struck out six without surrendering a walk.
Great Bend put up four runs in the first inning of the second game off Hays starter Cole Murphy. Hays got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single from Dom Bainter.
The Indians won the game with a four-run bottom of the seventh. Riggs opened with a double, Murphy drew a walk and Cody Petersen was a hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Trey VanPelt scored two with a single to bring the Indians within a run. Willie Sennett then walked before back-to-back RBI singles by Bainter and Hunter Brown lifted the Indians to victory.
Petersen earned the win after pitching two scoreless innings in relief.
Hays, 8-4 overall, will host the Western Plains Diamond Classic Thursday through Saturday.
