With players battling furious wind gusts, Monday's Thomas More Prep-Marian Invitational was going to come down to which players could best adapt to the conditions.

Plainville's Tanner Copeland and TMP's Cameron Rozean were equally impressive in that respect, each firing rounds of 84 to set up some drama with a playoff.

Copeland came out on top in the playoff, edging Rozean with a par on hole No. 1 to claim the individual title at Smoky Hill Country Club.

Copeland paved the way for the Cardinals to take the team title with a total score of 350. Phillipsburg took second with 377.

The wind gusts reached around 45 miles an hour throughout the day.

"It's basically just a mental game," Copeland said of playing in the wind. "Extra clubs, sometimes swing it a little lighter. It's basically just mental. It was just a solid round, overall."

Rozean's 84 led TMP to a fourth-place finish with a 385, one-shot behind third-place Goodland.

"Going into the wind, the goal was just to keep the shots low," Rozean said. "And then if I was with the wind, take advantage of it with the distance.

"It can be kind of challenging, but everybody has to play with the same conditions."

In the playoff, Copeland found the fairway on his tee shot and then hit a solid approach shot before using two putts to make par.

"I just wanted to put the drive in the fairway and see what I could do from there," Copeland said.

"It feels amazing, honestly," he added. "We're one of the smaller schools here, so it feels pretty good."

Plainville had two other top-five finishes with Justin Plante taking third with an 86 and Parker Krob placing fourth with an 87. Goodland's Garin Ihrig rounded out the top five with an 88.

"I think this is the first time we've won it as a team here," Copeland said. "We've been on a roll, playing pretty good. Now we've just got to come out the next tournament and play that way, too."

Rozean, who missed a putt from a few feet out for par on the playoff hole, said Monday was his first time competing in a playoff.

"I was a little nervous," Rozean said. "I think I let that get in my head a little bit, but after I hit the first shot I kind of went back to business as usual, just like I'd play normal golf.

"Props to Tanner, he played really well."

Rozean also walked away from the round proud of his showing.

"I feel like I played pretty good," he said. "I didn't start out too hot, but I finished pretty well and was happy with the way I finished and the round, overall.

"It was nice to represent Hays and TMP pretty well today."

TMP's next best team score came from Michael Braun with a 96. Alec Stults had a 101 while Ryan Stoecklein and Jack Johnson each had 104s to round out the team scores.
