Even before one school year ends, First Call For Help is gearing up for another. Registration closes July 23 for the organization’s annual Backpacks For Kids program, which provides school supplies to local families in need.

The program also has begun collecting monetary donations and school supplies, and organizers say their supply is running low.

A dine-out night at Freddy’s Frozen Custard will benefit the program from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Those eating at Freddy’s must mention Backpacks For Kids while ordering so a portion of proceeds benefit the charity.

Those who would like for their children to receive a backpack full of supplies can register online at firstcallelliscounty.com or by calling (785) 623-2800. Distribution day will be Aug. 2. The program is intended to help families who are low income or facing an unexpected hardship.

Donations also are needed, and a list of requested items can be found on the organization’s website. Monetary donations can be earmarked for the program and mailed to First Call For Help at 607 E. 13th in Hays.
