Monday's regional opener wasn't quite the postseason performance Hays High soccer coach Silas Hibbs wanted to see, but he took comfort in knowing the Indians will have another opportunity to improve on it.

Hays notched a 2-0 win over Augusta at home to advance to the Class 4-1A Central/South Central Regional No. 2 final. The Indians (10-6-1) will play at Mulvane (14-2-1) on Thursday.

“I’ll be frank: I’m thankful we got the win, but I’m not very pleased with how we played,” Hibbs said. “Definitely thankful we have an opportunity to play another game and hopefully we can exhibit what we’ve been working on this year a little better.”

Savannah Schneider put the Indians on the board 19 minutes into the game and Allison Shubert added an insurance goal midway through the second half. Isabel Robben earned the shutout in goal.

Hibbs said he was looking for better anticipation and a higher sense of urgency from his team, but did find a few positives.

“We played some girls in some new positions, which was good,” he said. “We kept them off the board with a shutout. We kept our composure even though we were kind of getting kicked around in the middle of the field a little bit.”

Hibbs said he’s hoping to see the Indians utilize the strengths they showed during the regular season when the Indians take on Mulvane on Thursday.

“We center around our versatility,” Hibbs said. “We have a lot of different looks we can throw at people. I think we’ve defended pretty solid this entire season. If we can continue to be confident in the attacking half of the field, I think we’ll be in good shape.”
