NICODEMUS — The Nicodemus Chautauqua returns for a second year from noon to 4:30 p.m. May 26.

Sponsored by the Nicodemus Historical Society, Dane G. Hansen Foundation and Walmart of Hays, the chautauqua will feature free food, music and stories of the Rooks County town’s past.

Scheduled performers under the big tent include:

• Leroy Walz as Nicodemus newspaper editor Lightfoot quarreling with W.R. Hill, editor and town organizer, portrayed by Phil Martin.

• Len Shamber, Damar, describing the 1886 fire.

• Daniel Moore as Postmaster Zach Fletcher, detailing the settlers’ response to Indians who arrived in town in the winter of 1878.

The Nicodemus Old New Timers Band will play period music in between performances.
