Former Newton High School assistant boys’ basketball coach Justin Schneider will return as the Railers’ girls’ head coach.
Schneider succeeds Randy Jordan, who stepped down after 16 seasons and a Class 5A state title.
Schneider also will serve as a business teacher at Chisholm Middle School.
He spent last season as the assistant boys’ basketball coach at Halstead High School under Lonnie Lollar. Halstead won the Class 3A state title last March.
He spent five seasons as an assistant boys’ coach at Newton under coaches Don Cameron, Andy Preston and Andy Hill.
“We are excited for Coach Schneider’s return to the sideline at NHS, and know that he will continue to work hard to develop and grow the girls’ basketball program,” Newton activities director Brian Becker said. “He comes with a desire to bring energy and excitement into the girls’ program, and to continue the tradition that has been developed within the program. Justin also understands what it takes to compete in the AV-CTL.”
Schneider inherits a team that finished 15-7 last season, falling in the Class 5A sub-state finals to Salina Central. The team finished 8-4 in AV-CTL I play, tying for second. Newto took second in the Newton Invitational Tournament.
His first duties include the team camp June 24 through 27 at the high school and summer weights and conditioning.
