A snake at a substation north of Hays caused a power outage Wednesday night for more than 4,600 customers in Ellis County.

“Basically it made contact between two lines on top of a transformer and blew out an insulator. When that happened it opened up the fuses for circuits that serve most of the city of Hays and Ellis,” Mike Morley, Midwest Energy director of corporate communications, said Thursday morning.

The majority of customers were without power for up to 50 minutes.
