Two Hays men waived their right to a preliminary hearing Thursday in Ellis County District Court on charges stemming from a vehicle robbery.

Jordyn Mikhail Steinike and Uriah Javaughn Steinike appeared in court together Thursday afternoon for a scheduled preliminary hearing. The hearing was delayed for almost an hour as attorneys negotiated a plea bargain, however.

Each has been charged with aggravated intimidation of a witness, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of burglary of a motor vehicle and two counts of theft over less than $10 in coins.

The charges stem from a report of a vehicle burglary at around 2 a.m. May 18 in the 400 block of Halladay. A resident told police he witnessed someone burglarizing the vehicle of someone he knew and confronted the man. The witness backed off when he realized there was an accomplice. The man allegedly pointed what appeared to be a gun at the witness.

Police were called to the scene and a foot chase ensued. One of the suspects was arrested in the 800 block of Ash while the other was arrested in the 200 block of West Eighth.

A date to enter the plea agreement was not set at Thursday’s hearing.
