Heavy rains Friday morning caused widespread flooding in Hays, with a number of streets blocked off and vehicles stranded in flooded intersections.
The Dodge City National Weather Service reported at 10 a.m. more than inch of rain fell in 20 minutes over Ellis County, with reports of more than 3 inches in less than an hour Friday morning.
Street flooding was reported throughout town. On 17th Street between Ash and Fort streets, a car was almost completely submerged, while others were partially submerged. Cars stalled in flooded intersections, prompting emergency calls for Hays fire and police to check on stranded motorists.
Flooding was also reported along 27th Street.
While the Wild West Festival grounds received a drenching, the Sara Evans concert with opening act Morrison County continued as scheduled Friday night.
The VIP/handicapped parking area near the grounds had to be closed due to muddy conditions, however, and those visitors were encouraged to park at Gross Memorial Coliseum or Lewis Field Stadium on the Fort Hays State University campus, where there was a shuttle service provided by the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The morning’s games from the baseball tournament were postponed to later in the evening.
