While emergency personnel were dealing with calls Friday morning regarding flooded streets in Hays, the Hays Police Department received a report of a stolen car

According to a press release from the HPD, officers were dispatched at 11:34 a.m. to Southside Convenience, 703 Vine, where a 1997 Ford Explorer in front of the store had been stolen by a man.

The man drove the vehicle south on Vine and left it in a field south of Hays, according to the release.

The Kansas Highway Patrol, the Ellis County Sheriff’s office and the HPD established a perimeter and began searching for the man.

A KHP K9 patrol tracked the man, later identified as Dru A. Stropes, 24. He was arrested on suspicion of felony theft of a vehicle and booked into the Ellis County Jail.
