SABETHA — The Hays Sr. Monarchs cruised to a 10-1 victory over Garnett in their Class AA State Legion Baseball Tournament opener on Wednesday in Sabetha. 

The Monarchs (16-4-1) pulled away with a seven-run third inning and forced the run-rule after five innings. Hays took advantage of five walks and two errors in the third.

Hays drew twice as many walks as they had hits, taking 10 free passes and collecting five hits. 

Trent Mayo tossed the first 3.1 innings for the Monarchs while Tate Garcia pitched the last 1.2. Cole Zimmerman and Mayo each drove in two runs for Hays. 

The Monarchs, comprised mostly of Thomas More Prep-Marian players, will play Sabetha in their second game of pool play at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Sabetha High School defeated TMP-Marian 10-5 in the Class 3A state championship this past spring. 

The Monarchs will close out pool play at 8:!5 p.m. Friday against Marysville.
