Neighbors in a Hays apartment building called 911 when an air conditioner in one unit caught on fire.

The Hays Fire Department was dispatched at 12:27 p.m. to 503 Elm, according to a press release from newly promoted Chief Ryan Hagans. Ellis County Rural Fire Company 5, the Hays Police Department and Ellis County EMS also responded.

Firefighters found a window air conditioning unit burning inside an apartment. After forcing entry, one hose line was used to control the fire, which was contained in the kitchen.

The most probable cause was a malfunction of the air conditioner’s electric outlet, according to the release.

Six fire trucks and 19 firefighters responded. The last of the crew left the scene about 2:30 p.m.
