DEERFIELD — Every antique car lovers dream can come true this September thanks to Raimon G. "Bud" Walters Jr.'s estate.
Nearly 400 antique cars, old tractors and vintage signs are up for bidding during a two-day sale of the collection of the owner of a former dealership.
"This gentleman must have been a very interesting individual," said Joe Sullivan, co-owner of Sullivan Auctioneers, LLC in Hamilton, Ill., the firm conducting the sale.
Walters and his brothers owned and operated Walters Motor Co., which sold Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge cars.
Walters was an avid collector who never married, and owned several ranches to house his growing accumulation of cars. Sullivan and his crew have been the first to inspect Walters's larger-than-life collection and said it has been untouched. The auction starts at 8 a.m. both days of the sale — Sept. 17 and 18. The auction will be just south of Deerfield the first day and on the west edge of Garden City on the second day.
"It's always interesting to find these collections that have never been touched; nobody has picked through this stuff. It's always neat to find a collection that's intact because when we were going through the buildings, everything was left the way it was when he got it. Even his heirs aren't keeping anything," he said.
There will be a wide array of vehicle models from different eras. However, Sullivan said that these vehicles are not in running condition.
"They don't have batteries a lot of the glass is broken on them. I think people will be shocked at what they bring, but these are rare collectible cars," he said.
Some highlights of the sale include a Hudson Terraplane, an REO Speed Wagon, Cadillacs and many trucks — both cab over engines and pickups.
"The Hudson car is a half-car, half-pickup truck . It's very aerodynamic and is a beautiful piece of art. We also have a 1959 Cadillac Hearse and a 1948 Cadillac ambulance that's painted green. It even has the old ambulance sign painted on it still," he said.
While there may be many vehicles at this auction, there will also be a huge offering of rustic memorabilia.
"There's license plates, signs just all sorts of antiques you can imagine that still have the dirt and dust on them," he said.
Sullivan said he expects nearly 1,000 or more people each day to attend this estate sale.
"People are coming from all over the states even out of the states. There's also tractors, windmills any kind of antiques people can imagine there will be," he said.
Sullivan's auctioneers will ride on the back of a pickup truck that will drive through the lots of old cars.
Sullivan said that those interested in the sale will not be able to view the collection until the Saturday and Sunday before the event.
"Both locations will be open and people can look around before the sale starts. We will have everything sold by Tuesday night," he said.
Day one of the sale, signs will be posted, along U.S. Highway 25, south of Lakin, and along U.S. Highway 50, north of Deerfield.
On day two, signs will be posted starting at the stoplight at the Junction of Old U.S. 50, West Kansas Avenue and North Taylor Avenue. There is no physical address for the event.
