Led by two top-10 finishes each, Hays High and Thomas More Prep-Marian had equally productive days at the Hays High Invitational on Monday at Smoky Hill County Club.
The Indians and Monarchs both finished 12 shots back of tournament champion Garden City in the nine-hole tournament, posting identical team scores of 217. Hays High took second place on the tiebreaker by virtue of the fifth-score tiebreaker.
TMP’s Shannen Chin, last year’s Class 3-2-1A state champion, took second place individually with a 39, one stroke behind Garden City’s Alyssa McMillen.
Hays High was led by Brittani Park’s fifth-place finish (52) while Sophia Garrison took seventh (53) for the Indians.
The Indians lost standout Karee Dinkel from last year but returned the rest of the team.
“She was one of the best players in the state, so you have to make up 22 strokes, because she averaged like 73 last year,” Hays High coach Mark Watts said of Dinkel. “This is probably the hardest course we’ll play and we’ve only had two weeks of practice, but I’ve got some experienced girls back.”
Emily McGuire and Emily George both posted 56s for Hays High while Molly Eikenberry and Taleia McCrae had 59s.
“We started out pretty good but then we had some big numbers on some holes — three putts, four putts,” Watts said. “Then we had some penalty strokes out of bounds. But we did get second. When I look at our scores, we’re the only ones that had all six players in the 50s. So we’re going to be able during the year to count on anybody to step up and be one of those four.”
Chin was joined in the top 10 by TMP’s Avin Inlow, who carded a 56. Jenna Romme had a 59 and Haleigh Spray and Abby Heimerman each recorded 63s for the Monarchs.
Salina South took fourth as a team with a 236, one shot ahead of fifth-place Dodge City.
Garden City’s Elena Lemke was third individually with a 46 followed by Dodge City’s Breanna Galindo’s 51.
