Friday night’s Eight-Man Division II, District 5 matchup between Thunder Ridge and Sylvan-Lucas came down to the wire in Kensington. The visiting Mustangs ran away with a 52-48 victory, handing Thunder Ridge just its second loss as four teams now sit 1-1 in district play behind Osborne.

Sylvan-Lucas picked up the win despite four total touchdowns for Longhorns senior Brandon Grauerholz. The senior rushed for 218 yards and three scores, then connected on 1 of 3 passing attempts for 22 yards and a score. However, sophomore Jacob Barnes threw two interceptions in the loss. Sylvan-Lucas posted a season-high in points, and moved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in district play ahead of this week’s matchup against Northern Valley, another 1-1 district team that carries a 4-1 overall record — with its lone loss coming at the hands of Thunder Ridge.

The other 1-1 team, Logan-Palco, is 2-3 overall. The Trojans fell 54-6 at the hands of Osborne (4-1), the only team unbeaten in district play.

Osborne 54, Logan-Palco 6

OSBORNE — Darrien Holloway rushed for 131 yards and two scores, with Darnell Holloway adding 79 yards and two scores. The latter also threw for 84 yards on 3 of 3 passing attempts and one TD — to Kade Miller. The game ended at halftime via the mercy rule.

Osborne won its third consecutive blowout since suffering a 52-20 loss to Hoxie in Week 2. The Bulldogs will travel to Wilson (1-4) on Friday. Logan-Palco will play its lone game in Palco against Thunder Ridge for Palco’s homecoming.

Northern Valley 50, Wilson 0

ALMENA — The host Huskies moved to 4-1 and 1-1 in district play, ending the game with a touchdown in the third quarter. Caden Bach had five total touchdowns — four rushing and one passing. He had scoring runs of 43, 18, 19 3 and 40 yards, and hit Ross Cole for a 45-yard pass just before halftime. The last score was an Alex Van Patten 20 yard run with 9:39 to play in the third quarter. Northern Valley has scored at leas 48 points in each of its four wins, and will take on Sylvan-Lucas on Friday in Sylvan Grove.

St. Francis 64, Hoxie 30

ST. FRANCIS — Since Sept. 30 of the 2016 season, the defending Eight-Man Division I Hoxie football team has lost just twice. After Friday, both of those losses now have come at the hands of St. Francis. St. Francis handed Hoxie its only loss in a title run in 2017 (16-8), and now knocked off the champs in Eight-Man Division I, District 8 play, leaving Hoxie in a four-way tie for second place, and St. Francis atop the district at 5-0, 2-0.

Wichita County 58, Trego 12

WAKEENEY — Wichita County, with its only loss coming to Hoxie, now sits tied with Hoxie, Trego and Oberlin at 1-1 in District 8. Wichita County scored 50 points in the second quarter to end the game early via the mercy rule at halftime against the Golden Eagles. That included scoring the final four touchdowns of the half. Trego’s lone scores came on a 42-yard run by Dallas Schneider and a 52-yard kick return in the second quarter.

The Golden Eagles travel to Oberlin this week. The Red Devils handed Atwood-Rawlins County a 30-0 loss on Friday. Wichita County is at home to face unbeaten St. Francis.

ATWOOD — Colton Ketterl rushed for 138 yards and one touchdown as the Red Devils moved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Eight-Man Division I, District 8 play. Dawson Kempt had three rushing scores on 16 attempts for 79 yards, and Gavon Uehlin rushed 16 times for 115 yards and one score. Oberlin rushed for 335 yards in the victory. Rawlins County fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in district play. Oberlin is at home to face Trego in Week 6. Rawlins County will travel to Hoxie (4-1).

Ness City 46, Kinsley 0

NESS CITY — The host Eagles cruised to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Eight-Man Division I, District 6, and is now tied atop the district with Hodgeman County (5-0) and Spearville (4-1), two of the final three teams on Ness City’s schedule. The Eagles got two touchdown runs from Hector Rodriguez, and two from Edwin Rodriguez as the game ended at halftime. Ness City also recorded a safety, and got two rushing scores from Angel Guzman. The three backs combined for 221 rushing yards on just 17 carries, essentially scoring every third time they touched the ball.

Hill City 51, Stockton 6

HILL CITY — Hill City is one of four 1-1 teams in Eight-Man Division I, District 7, thanks to a home rout Friday of the visiting Tigers. Conner Born rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns, and threw for 127 yards and two more as Hill City moved to 3-2 overall.

Born hit Tate Reynolds and Brody McDowell for scores, while Dalen Journigan added a 55-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Jayce Hamel also recorded a touchdown and put the finishing touches on the mercy rule with a 20-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Stockton’s lone score came in the first quarter, making it a 6-6 tie. Brady Beougher returned a kick 63 yards to the house.

Hill City is at Lincoln (2-3) on Friday, while Stockton will be at home to face unbeaten and district top dog Clifton-Clyde.

Clifton-Clyde 54, Victoria 30

CLIFTON — Clifton-Clyde proved itself to be top dog in what some might consider the title game in Eight-Man Division I, District 7. Victoria gave the Eagles their closest game of the season, and scored the most points against Clifton-Clyde, but it wasn’t enough.

Cooper Windholz had two touchdown passes and a 40-yard touchdown run in the contest. He connected with Walker Braun and Caden Oberle for scores. Jayvonn Pruitt recorded a pair of touchdown runs as well.

Clifton-Clyde moved to 5-0, and 2-0 atop the district, and will travel to 2-3 Stockton next week. Victoria (3-2, 1-1) returns home to face Washington County (3-2, 1-1) on Friday.

Otis-Bison 48, Minneola 12

MINNEOLA — Otis-Bison put up 52 points by halftime and rolled to the mercy rule win to start the third, sitting 4-1 overall and 4-0 atop Eight-Man Division II, District 8. Anton Foust passed for 109 yards and three scores, and added a 23-yard rushing score in the victory. Bevan Gradig added 91 rushing yards and two scores. Two touchdowns went to Seth Hoopingarner on two catches for 74 yards. Maitland Wiltse also caught a 35-yard score. Foust added a 56-yard kick return to open the third quarter that capped the scoring.

Otis-Bison will return home in Week 6 to face Kiowa-South Barber (5-0) in non-district action.

Eight-Man Division II, District 6

SHARON SPRINGS — In Eight-Man Division II, District 6 action, Quinter lost its 33rd straight contest as Wallace County moved to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in district play. Dighton leads the district at 3-2 overall and 2-0 in district play. Wheatland-Grinnell, after winning its season opener, dropped its fourth straight Friday, falling 48-6 at the hands of Greeley County (2-3, 1-1). Triplains-Brewster fell 47-0 at the hands of Dighton on Friday.

Norton 39, Minneapolis 7

MINNEAPOLIS — Norton won just its second game, but moved to 5-0 and 1-1 in Class 2A, District 8 play with its rout of Minneapolis. The Lions fell to 3-2 overall and 1-1 league play. Norton will be at home to face 1-4 Thomas More Prep-Marin in district play on Friday.

Smith Center 42, Oakley 0

SMITH CENTER — Colby Benoit had three rushing scores, while Hesston Maxwell and Jaden Atwood each added one as Smith Center rolled to its second straight win and recorded a third shutout in the process. Aside from a 42-14 loss to unbeaten Phillipsburg, the Redmen have given up just 10 points, coming last week in a 21-10 win against Plainville.

Benoit had 134 rushing yards Friday and Ethan Peterson added 102 as Smith Center recorded 419 on the ground.

The Redmen open Class 1A, District 5 play on Friday at home against Salina-Sacred Heart (2-3, 0-0). Sacred Heart defeated La Crosse 37-0 on Friday. La Crosse dropped to 3-2 ahead of its 1A, District 6 opener against Plainville.

Plainville 38, Republic County 0

BELLEVILLE — Plainville bounced back from its 21-10 loss to Smith Center by blasting 0-5 Republic County early and often. That included an 8-yard fumble return for a score by Jared Casey. Casey added a 8-yard touchdown run, while Jordan Finnesy tossed a pair of touchdowns to Kobe Spiess in the win.

Finnesy was 6 of 11 passing for 168 yards and two scores, while Casey finished with 69 yards rushing. Plainville will be at La Crosse (2-3) to open Class 1A, District 6 play this week.

Syracuse 28, Ellis 15

SYRACUSE — Ellis fell to 1-4 overall as Syracuse moved to 3-2 behind 328 rushing yards. Reece Hart had 123 yards and a score, while Edgar Gonzalez added 102 yards and a score for host Bulldogs.

Ellis will open Class 1A, District 6 play at home against Oakley on Friday.

Class 3A, District 8

Colby continued its hot season with a 49-8 win against Concordia at home. The Eagles put up a season-high in points as they moved to 2-0 atop the district, tied with Scott City (5-0). Colby will travel to Russell on Friday. Russell suffered a 56-7 loss at the hands of unbeaten Scott City, and fell to 2-3. Scott City will travel to Beloit on Friday. In other district action, Goodland dropped a 52-14 decision to Beloit to fall to 0-5. Goodland is at Concordia on Friday.

Six-man

Golden Plains moved to 5-0 by routing Natoma 63-14. The Bulldogs have yet to have a close contest this season ahead of next week’s matchup against Weskan (2-2). In other action, Cheylin defeated Western Plains 55-0 and will have an open week this week. Western Plains (0-4) will take on Natoma (2-3) next.
