Two second-half goals from Liberal helped the Redskins stave off a Hays High comeback on Thursday at HHS Field.
The game was knotted at 3-3 in the second half but Liberal took the lead for good on a goal from Estevan Dominguez with just under 20 minutes left and Mike Fonseca later added an insurance goal to help the Redskins pick up a 5-3 win.
Liberal jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half before back-to-back goals from Jacob Maska and Trae McCrae, but Fonseca scored late in the half to give the Redskins a 3-2 halftime lead.
McCrae evened it up again early in the third after connecting on a free kick from just outside the box, but Hays High struggled to create scoring looks down the stretch.
The Indians will be off for two weeks before hosting Thomas More Prep-Marian on Oct. 18.
Monarchs fall to Dodge City
TMP-Marian was unable to mount an upset bid against Dodge City, falling 4-0 to the Red Demons on Thursday at Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.
Dodge City took control with two early goals en route to improving to 12-0.
The Monarchs will play at Wichita Classical next Thursday.
